THE CORNWALL CENTRE
Having burned to the ground this important part of Redruth’s historic fabric was in need of rebuilding. Fortunately, the strong granite faced external walls had survived largely intact, providing an enclosure for the new building and maintaining the outward character of the building in the street scene. The roof and interior are entirely new, including an additional floor level in the Alma Place buildings. There is a completely new building over what was the meat market. Alma Place is an integral part of The Cornwall Centre and set below the main building with access at the lower level. Completed in 2001 and Winner of the CPRE / RIBA Cornwall Architecture Awards 2002 Restoration project, Annual award for Cornish Buildings Group Award for Restoration and conversion plus a mention in the Civic Trust Awards 2002. Working with Devon and Cornwall Housing Association this restored Grade 2 listed building is home to a shopping arcade, Redruth Foyer and the Cornish Studies centre, while retaining its unique historic features.
