Meet the talented team at CAD Architects
MARK DAWES
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Mark is a founding Director (along with Steve Hooper, Roger Hocking and the late Paul Newton) of Cornwall Architectural Design Ltd. The company was incorporated in November 2000 and subsequently became CAD Architects Ltd in November 2003. Mark wanted to create a practice which would compete with the larger firms outside of Cornwall.
Mark is experienced in all aspects of design, construction and development economics. Having run a building company in the early 1990’s and having worked in property development, Mark understands the imperatives when considering any new project. In running a large practice, Mark has instilled an ethos of delivery within the team, which is evidenced by the many buildings and planning approvals achieved by CAD Architects Ltd.
ROGER HOCKING
ARCHITECT – DIRECTOR (RIBA)
Roger Hocking is a founding Director (along with Mark Dawes, Steve Hooper and the late Paul Newton) of Cornwall Architectural Design Ltd. The company was incorporated in November 2000 and subsequently became CAD Architects Ltd in November 2003. Like Mark and Paul, Roger had worked for regional firms (such as MWT Architects) and wanted to create a practice that would compete with the larger firms based outside of Cornwall.
Roger is a vastly experienced contract administrator and technically competent architect who revels in the detail of a project. Roger was the architect for The Hall for Cornwall and for Pydar House (Cornwall Council’s new offices in Truro).
ROSS EDWARDS
ARCHITECT – DIRECTOR (RIBA)
Ross joined CAD Architects Ltd with Christopher Hendra and was appointed as a Director in 2003. Having worked in London following his qualification, Ross has a strong commercial background in office and retail. Whilst working with Chris Hendra he used those skills to great effect in designing and delivering Lemon Street Market, an award-winning retail project.
Ross continues to apply his commercial skills on hotel, office and developer housing projects, and has also built a reputation for delivering high quality individual dwellings.
JEREMY BRADLEY
ARCHITECT – DIRECTOR (RIBA)
Jeremy is an Australian/British architect, who has lived in Cornwall since 2003. Jeremy previously worked in other local practices and then went on to run his own firm, JFB Architecture, based in St. Agnes. Jeremy joined CAD Architects as a Director in January 2014.
Living on the rugged but beautiful north Cornish coast has given Jeremy a taste for designing contextual coastal dwellings. Working with self-builders and developers, Jeremy has delivered outstanding houses and housing schemes across Cornwall.
STEVE HOOPER
ARCHITECTURAL – DIRECTOR
Steve is a founding Director (along with Mark Dawes, Roger Hocking and the late Paul Newton) of Cornwall Architectural Design Ltd. The company was incorporated in November 2000 and subsequently became CAD Architects Ltd in November 2003. Steve wanted to create a platform to deliver a high-
quality, delivery-focused service to the Roseland area. The number of successful projects completed in St Mawes and around the Roseland Peninsula since 2000 is testament to that aim being achieved.
Steve’s background in quantity surveying and building surveying make him an ideal project coordinator and contract administrator. His attention to detail and pursuit of quality shine through in his completed projects and in his clients’ testimonials.
SAM MAYOU
HERITAGE DIRECTOR
Sam joined CAD Architects Ltd in 2002 as a junior architectural technician. During his time with CAD he has studied and gained a number of qualifications, culminating in a post graduate diploma in Building Conservation. Sam’s application of his Conservation qualification is demonstrated in the quality of his work, his professionalism and his ability to win work and reassure clients. These talents led to Sam being appointed a Director in January 2017.
Sam has a passion for the historic built environment and expresses that passion through the careful and thoughtful application of design, in order to deliver restored or altered buildings that are relevant to the 21st Century and to their intended use.
Both residential and commercial clients own or buy Listed Buildings, often without a full awareness of the implications. This is where Sam can assist in pre or post purchase advice. Understanding the building and its history can often unlock a scheme that would otherwise be paralysed by red tape.
PETER LAPIN
CONSULTING ENGINEER (CEng., BSc., MICE) – ASSOCIATE
Peter is a Chartered Civil Engineer with more than 40 years experience working in the construction industry. He provides civil and structural engineering input to initially steer in-house projects in the right direction, and also provides these services on an external consultancy basis.

GARETH ELLIS

With a BA in Architecture & Planning and an MA in Architecture, Gareth joined us in 2017 from Nash Partnership, an architectural practice based in Bath, Somerset.
Gareth has extensive experience within the residential sector. He has worked on projects ranging from large scale developments to one-off high end houses, acting as project lead. Gareth has strong ties to Cornwall and is delighted to be based in the county and able to work on leading local architectural projects.
STEVE WHOMERSLEY

As recognition of Steve’s skills and commitment he was made an Associate Director in 2014.
Steve is now responsible for the delivery of a wide range of technical packages, for projects ranging from single high spec dwellings to multi-house developer schemes.
MATT LAITY
ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST (ACIAT) – ASSOCIATE
Matt first arrived at CAD in 2012 as a placement student from a degree in Architectural Technology and Design at University of the West of England in Bristol. Following a successful year and after graduating with a first-class degree, he returned to join the firm as an Architectural Technologist and Designer.
In 2021, Matt was appointed as an Associate Director in recognition of his skills, commitment and effective team management. His responsibilities encompass a range of projects, including residential development schemes, commercial units, and high-end luxury private dwellings.
SALLY JONES
ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATE

She has since worked as an Architectural Designer with a range of RIBA chartered practices, as well as a timber frame manufacturer and her own design company, whilst continuing her education with RIBA Studio (formerly RIBA Office-based Examination).
Sally is a very capable and experienced designer. Since joining CAD Architects in 2004, she has developed good strategic thinking and technical skills and manages a diverse portfolio of projects including housing developments, leisure and tourism schemes, student accommodation, commercial properties, as well as bespoke contemporary homes.
A passionate advocate of the hand-drawn sketch, Sally is a self-confessed doodle and marginalia enthusiast and loves crafting and time spent on her allotment. As a cartophile, she also enjoys orienteering and travelling, and relaxes with Tai Chi.
CRAIG COADE
ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT
Craig first arrived at CAD as a junior technician in 2007, before achieving a first-class degree in Architecture at Birmingham City University. Following his studies, Craig returned to join the firm as a Part 1 architectural assistant.
Since returning, Craig has proved that he has a full understanding of construction, while his natural organisation and coordination skills make him a good contract administrator. Most notably, Craig completed and helped our client deliver the Stable Bar & Restaurant in Exeter’s Guild Hall. This was a complex commercial project within an even larger commercial project. Coordinating the client’s information, whilst keeping abreast of the Landlord’s information requirements, was no small task.
KYRAN HOOPER
ARCHITECTURAL TECHNICIAN
Kyran started working at CAD Architects as a Junior Trainee and completed his ONC and HNC studies to become a qualified Architectural Technician.
He has a strong understanding of Construction Technology and continues to develop his skills in this field whilst carrying out measured Building Surveys and initial Concept Design work.
Kyran works on high-end bespoke residential properties from conception through construction to handover.
TANYA CATHROW
OFFICE MANAGER
As our Office Manager, Tanya is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of our office. Without Tanya there would be chaos! Her charming yet insistent nagging means that we always remember our appointments or to return phone calls.
The whole office is Tanya’s domain and she rules it with a rod of iron wrapped in cotton wool.
Having been Miss Barbados 1989, her cheerful disposition pervades the whole office and ensures that even the grumpiest members of staff raise at least the occasional smile.
SIMON BRAY
COMPANY SECRETARY
Cornish-born and bred, Simon has been with CAD Architects since the start in 2000 and is proud of the company that it’s become.
He passed the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants exams in 1993. He loves to play golf, currenlty having a handicap of 4 – and was one of the recent captains of Truro Golf Club.
