Location: St Mawes

Sensitive Renewal in a Protected Landscape

  • Originally constructed in the mid-20th century with an Art Deco influence, the existing house and garage occupied a prominent, elevated position at the heart of the village — overlooking the more traditional cottages that line the seafront. The property lies within both the Conservation Area and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), requiring a design approach that was both considered and contextually responsive.

Design Approach & Materials

  •  The completed home retains a clear visual connection to the original dwelling through the careful selection of external materials — all of which reflect those commonly found in the surrounding settlement. While the building has been extended and modernised, it remains comparable in scale to nearby properties and sits comfortably within its generous plot.

Preserving the Character of the AONB

  • Thanks to its appropriate scale, use of locally distinctive materials, and respect for the built character of the village, the project is considered to conserve and enhance the landscape of this sensitive part of the AONB.
